Organisational Structure
The Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food promotes the development, adaptation and competitiveness of the agriculture and agri-food sector through policies and programs that are most appropriately provided by the federal government. The overall goal is to help the sector maximize its contribution to Canada's economic and environmental objectives and achieve a safe, high quality food supply while maintaining a strong foundation for the agriculture and agri-food sector and rural communities.
Canadian Food Inspection Agency regulates plants, plant products and related items to prevent the entry and spread of plant pests and diseases. Imported plants and plant products are capable of introducing new pests into Canada that could threaten Canadian agriculture and forestry. CFIA's Plant Health and Production Division is responsible for developing programs to protect plant life and the agricultural and forestry sectors of the Canadian economy. The regulatory authority to carry out this mandate is provided under the Plant Protection Act and Regulations.
