Organisational Structure
A vital partnership was created when the departments of Horticultural Science and Crop Science and the Horticultural Research Institute of Ontario (HRIO) became the Department of Plant Agriculture. Designed to strengthen the existing disciplines and provide new opportunities for co-operation in research and teaching, the department has four divisions - horticultural science, crop science, plant biotechnology and the HRIO (part of the University's enhanced partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs). The horticulture science, crop science and plant biotechnology divisions are located within the university whereas the Horticultural Research Institute of Ontario, consists of one central research unit and two branch locations. The headquarters are in Vineland Station, located on the south shore of Lake Ontario west of St.Catharines. The two branch locations are the Simcoe Research Station near the north shore of Lake Erie and the Muck Crops Research Stations near Bradford, in the Holland Marsh north of Toronto. The Vineland Station complex houses the central common services for the whole Institute: administration and accounting, library services, laboratories and engineering expertise for research projects. The Institute provides applied research and services for the production, evaluation, handling and storage of horticultural produces including fruits, vegetables and ornamentals.
