Organisational Structure
The University of Guelph was established in 1964 when three founding colleges - the Ontario Veterinary College (1862), the Ontario Agricultural College (1874) and Macdonald Institute (1903) - joined with a new college of arts and sciences. Today, there are six colleges in total, spanning the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities, three satellite agricultural colleges, at Ridgetown, Kemptville and Alfred, and the Horticultural Research Institute of Ontario. The main campus of more than 405 hectares includes a 165-hectare Arboretum and a 12-hectare Research Park. The Ontario Agricultural College is committed to training tomorrow's agrifood leaders today. Over the past 125 years, OAC has educated more than 23,000 students in modern agricultural practice, including agribusiness management, horticulture, plant and animal biology, food science and rural extension studies. The oldest and largest agricultural college in Canada, OAC is internationally renowned for its excellence in agricultural education and research, and for contributing to the strength of Canada's agrifood industry. The Department of Plant Agriculture includes the Crop Science division, Horticultural Science division and the Horticultural Research Institute of Ontario. Colleges conducting horticultural research are the three regional colleges of Alfred College, Kemptville College and Ridgetown College. The University enjoys a close working relationship with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs in the provision of education and research.
