Organisational Structure
On April 1, 1997, as a result of an Enhanced Partnership Agreement between the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and University of Guelph, responsibility for three agri-food colleges at Ridgetown, Alfred and Kemptville was transferred from OMAFRA to the University. These Regional Colleges coordinate administratively with the University, yet continue to serve the needs of their region. Kemptville and Ridgetown Colleges conduct horticultural research.
Kemptville is the oldest college of agricultural technology in Ontario and was established in 1916 to demonstrate and teach modern methods of agriculture. Since that time, Kemptville College has expanded to include research stations at Winchester, New Liskeard, Thunder Bay and Emo. Kemptville College, located less than an hour's drive south of Ottawa, offers programs in a wide-range of applied research related fields. With 12 hectares of manicured grounds and gardens and nearly 405 hectare campus, the College acts as an outdoor lab for landscape plants and plant identification. The Kemptville College Horticulture Unit focuses on turf, with a minor emphasis on sweet corn and small fruit research. Research on lowbush, half-high and highbush blueberry, lingonberry, cranberry and sweet corn cultivar trials is currently underway. There is significant potential for research to expand to include pesticides, management and economic studies.
