Organisational Structure
On April 1, 1997, as a result of an Enhanced Partnership Agreement between the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and University of Guelph, responsibility for three agri-food colleges at Ridgetown, Alfred and Kemptville was transferred from OMAFRA to the University. These Regional Colleges coordinate administratively with the University, yet continue to serve the needs of their region. Kemptville and Ridgetown Colleges conduct horticultural research.
Ridgetown College has a long tradition of education, research, and service to the community. Located in the municipality of Chatham-Kent in Southwestern Ontario, Canada, Ridgetown College provides the advantages of a rural small town atmosphere with the opportunities of larger centres less than 60 minutes away. The campus grounds cover over 202 hectares which are used to house both educational and research facilities, test plots, the J.J. Neilson Arboretum and land for crop production. Leading edge agricultural research plays a major role at Ridgetown College and allows them to serve the rural community in which they are located. The research programs at Ridgetown College combine discovery with an applied focus to address the concerns and opportunities within the agricultural and horticultural sectors. The wide range of programs is centred on an extensive field and horticultural crops mandate including plant breeding, crop management, soil and water conservation, pest management, farm management and economics. At the Cedar Springs Research Station, located approximately 45 km south east from the College, many hectares of small fruit and tree fruit research are conducted while at the Huron Research Station, 140 km north west from the College, extensive crop production and pest management activites take place. It is their mandate to assemble and manage planting and specimen collections, develop and create demonstration theme landscapes, and maintain the grounds of Ridgetown College, for the purposes of education, research and recreation. The Arboretum is maintained through a joint effort between Ridgetown College and the Ridgetown and District Horticultural Society.
