Organisational Structure
The French Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA) was set up in 1946 and in 1984 it became a national public scientific and technological research establisment, under the joint authority of the Ministries of Research and Agriculture.
INRA's new organisation was put into effect on 1st January 1998. Five scientific directorates have been set up: (i) Environment, Forests and Agriculture, (ii) Plants and Plant Products, (iii) Animals and Animal Products, (iv) Human nutrition and Food Safety, (v) Society, Economics and Decision-making.
These scientific directorates are responsible for the strategic orientation of INRA and its implementation.
The new organisation is based on 17 research departments including 340 research units disseminated in 21 regional centres. The research departments most involved in horticultural research are: Environment and Agronomy, Genetics and Plant Breeding, Plant Health and Environment, Plant Product Processing. The regional centres most involved in horticultural research are: Angers, Avignon, Bordeaux, Montpellier.

Today INRA has a threefold general mission that also applies to horticulture: (i) to guarantee consumers high-quality food, (ii) to ensure that agricultural and agro-food companies are competitive, (iii) to contribute to integrated land development and sustainable management of natural resources.
