The need for agricultural research in Mauritius had been felt since the early days of colonisation. This has led to the setting up of the Food and Agricultural Research Council (FARC) in 1985. The Council coordinates, monitors and promotes agricultural research and food production between the various research institutes. The council has identified a wide range of research projects covering plants and soils, animal production, post-harvest technology and food and nutrition. The various research institutions are responsible for the execution of these projects funded by the Council.
