The climate is humid tropical. The rainfall varies from 1555-3092 mm per year; the percentage Relative Humidity ranges from 50-100.
Suriname is situated at 2-6° northern latitude and 54-58° western longitude. The country can be divided into four regions going from the sea side land inwards: the young coastal plain (0-4 m above sea level), the old coastal plain (1-12 above sea level), the cover landscape (10-100 m above sea level), and the hilly/mountainous area (up to 1,230 m above sea level).
Horticulture consists mainly of growing tomatoes, cabbage, yard-beans, cucumbers, eggplant and leafy vegetables.
Distribution of Horticulture
Horticulture is mainly concentrated in the young coastal plain.
Research thrusts are the government and the international institutes (IICA, FAO).
