Organisational Structure
Horticulture Research International (HRI) is believed to be the world's largest single team of horticultural scientists. Its research and development work is conducted on six different sites, five of which have their own Site Director. The Department of Hop Research is located at Wye College but is administered from HRI - East Malling. Although the main source of funding for HRI is via government, there is increasing emphasis on seeking funding from other sources. For this purpose, HRI has set up a commercial contracting business with the registered trademark of "HortiTech".
Research Programs
Horticulture Research International conducts research on plant and crop processes, on countering biotic constraints on crop production, on improvement of horticultural crops and on horticulture and the environment. Its major customer groups include the UK public sector, the UK horticulture industry and UK-based retailers and processors as well as the European Union and other international agencies. An increasing proportion of its work is devoted to commercial contracts via the commercial contracting business, HortiTech.
