The Alaska Agricultural Experiment station is a part of the Land Grant college with objectives similar to Land Grant Colleges of the other states. The approaches to solving problems confronting humanity in Alaska are through teaching, research and extension. The Experiment Station Center is 7 miles west of Fairbanks at College, Alaska, the site of the University of Alaska, fairbanks. At College, Alaska the University has staff persons for work in Horticulture, Agronomy, Soils, Agricultural Economics, Animal Sciences and lesser related subjects. The Experiment Station Research center is at Palmer and Matunuska, 7 miles apart on the north shore of Cook Inlet and 40 miles northwest of the University of Alaska, Anchorage. At Palmer, the University has workers in Agronomy, Horticulture, Soils and Animal Science. The U.S. Department of Agriculture invested heavily in structures and personnel in 1948 to further northern agricultural research, In 1967 the facilities and a few workers were transferred to the state. U.S. Department of Agriculture through Science and Education Administration maintains research workers in Horticulture, Agronomy and soils, all of which are stationed at Fairbanks, Alaska. They are attached for Administration and logistics to the Western Region at Portland, Oregon. The Station conducts variety trials and develops cultural practices for agronomic and horticultural crops for interior Alaska. Projects include conservation tillage of small grains in Delta, Alaska; horticultural crops production; development of forages and alternative feed sources for reindeer and livestock production; nutrient cycling in forest soils; study of tree and small grain diseases.
