General info

Connecticut, the most southern state in New England has a widely diversified florist crop and bedding plant industry in protected cultivation. Flowering pot plants such as poinsettias, chrysanthemums, etc., floral and vegetable bedding plants, and cut roses are the principle crops. The production nursery industry combined with garden centers and other retail outlets of nursery products and landscape services play an increasing role in the horticulture of this heavily industrialized and urbanized area. The Connecticut River Valley is an important area for field grown nursery stock and combined with an increased emphasis on container production represents a sizable industry. Connecticut is home to the largest rhododendron grower in the country. A diversified vegetable industry exists with crops such as tomato, sweet corn, lettuce, cabbage, mushrooms, peppers, carrots and snapbeans grown for fresh market. Connecticut grown, fresh, high quality, direct marketing by the producer to the consumer at roadside farm stands and farmer markets dominates the industry. Fruit orchards exist throughout the state at the higher elevations. Connecticut is a leading New England producer of pears, and peaches. Small fruits such as strawberries are often widely grown and marketed as pick your own. Acreage in wine grapes has increased recently making Connecticut a leader in the production of grapes and premium wine in New England. Farm wineries and vineyards are located throughout the state. The University of Connecticut at Storrs has teaching, research, and extension program to support all areas of horticulture in Connecticut. Connecticut has two agricultural experiments. The Storrs Agricultural Experiment Station is part of the University of Connecticut. The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station is in New Haven and was founded in 1875, as the first Agricultural Experiment Station in the nation.
