The geography and climate of the states in the United States of America (USA) varies from polar to tropical.
Refer to Ecoregion and Hardiness Zones for individual states.
As a results of the wide range of climates of the United States, horticulture is extremely diverse.
Some idea of horticultural crops can be obtained by searching the crop map (CropMAP) in each state.
The major horticultural states are found on the west coast (Washington, Oregon, and California) and Florida where horticulture represents a significant part of the agriculture of that state.
Much of horticulture is carried out in the yards of gardens of individual citizens and in civic and state parks and gardens.
Horticultural research in the United States is carried out by academic departments in colleges and universities, especially the land-grant university, state and federal experiment stations, and increasingly by the private sector.
At the present time the private sector accounts for more than half of horticultural research.
Much of the horticultural research is published in the journals of Agricultural societies.
